Physician Scholarship Program 2006

Physician Scholarship Program 2006
Dr. Jenni Moon, a GP practicing in Halifax,  and Alison Petton, a Halifax nurse with a special interest in environmental health education are recipients of the fifth annual Elliott Scholarship in Environmental Medicine. The scholarship allows recipients to attend week long courses organized by the American Academy of Environmental Medicine.

“With this program we are increasing the number of health care professionals available in Nova Scotia to assist those suffering from environmental illnesses, “ notes Karen Robinson, chair of EHANS’ Treatment Committee. Over the past four years, EHANS has assisted six medical doctors, one naturopathic doctor and a nurse to obtain this training.

Canadian medical schools and continuing education courses don’t train doctors to practice environmental medicine, although it is a recognized specialty in the US.

The growing recognition of environmental effects on human health points out the need for doctors to understand the basics of environmental medicine. The scholarships are possible through generous in-kind donations from the American Academy of Environmental Medicine and Air Canada. “We couldn’t do it without them,” says Robinson. “They have both been wonderful supporters of this program over the past years.”

Donations to the E Bruce Elliott Memorial Scholarship fund can be made through EHANS. All donations are tax-deductible, and greatly appreciated Robinson says.
